Back to School with Better Eyesight

It may not be the first thing you think of when you’re getting ready to go back to school, but your eyesight is an important aspect of education, whether you’re a student or teacher.

To focus on your studies, you need to be able to focus on the presentation

The school year is rapidly approaching in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and all across British Columbia. For teachers and students there’s plenty to do before that first bell rings and everyone gets busy with another year of learning. One thing that’s probably not on your ‘to-do’ list is getting an eye exam. But clear vision is a crucial tool for post-secondary students, who can find large university or college lecture halls placing greater demands on their eyesight, at a time when good marks are as important as ever. With the costs for tuition climbing, it’s crucial to make the most of your in-class time. Laser vision correction may be one of the best investments you can make in your educational tool kit.

For teachers, having good eyesight is just as important, to deal with the constant re-focusing necessary when you’re switching your vision from near to far objects on a continual basis, all day long. And with the proliferation of high-contrast electronic tools in the classroom, such as video projectors and electronic whiteboards, the demands placed on your eyes are greater than ever before.
So, why not start the year right, with great eyesight making your life easier?

The first step, whether you are a student or a teacher, is to get your eyes checked. Sadly, the BC government doesn’t cover routine eye exams for people 19 to 64 years of age, which rules out the vast majority of post-secondary students and teachers. Happily, Boydvision offers a free consultation, to determine if you are a candidate for the procedures we offer.

If you’ve spent years dealing with glasses or contacts, you may be happy to know that laser eye surgery is available to anyone over the age of 18. For teachers over the age of 40, the surgical solutions to deal with the reality of aging eyes can also come as a welcome option. An important note – at Boydvision, we offer custom procedures at the lowest cost in B.C.

Here are some of the options available at Boydvision:

Custom LASIK – LASIK is the most popular technique of laser eye surgery to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses and contact lenses. Our custom approach uses additional information from the preoperative testing – including topographical and wavefront mapping, to give better results.

Custom PRK – Custom PRK (also know as aspheric or wavefront-optimized PRK) uses added information to help the laser reshape the cornea in a more sophisticated and efficient manner and with added precision. PRK surgery can be the preferred option for some patients, due to variables such as an active lifestyle, job, or hobbies. We can determine if this is the right choice for you during the initial consultation.

Laser Blended Vision Correction – People older than 45 years old generally lose focusing power, and gradually need reading glasses (progressive) bifocals. Laser Blended Vision creates an overlap in the field of vision as a “blend zone”, which is tolerated by 97% of the population. For potential candidates, a full and detailed consultation will be provided to collect accurate diagnostic information before the procedure. The right candidate will also need to feel comfortable with a slight difference in the vision between the two eyes.

Refractive Lens Exchange – For patients over 50 years of age with higher prescriptions, Laser Vision Correction may not be the best option to correct the refractive error and achieve optimum results. Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), or Lens replacement surgery is often a more suitable procedure. With this procedure the natural lens in the eye is removed, and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens with new focusing power.
